Common Queries and Questions

Below, we have included the most common questions and answers asked of our staff in regard to Mt. Alvernia Dental Centre.

  • What is dental plaque and calculus? +

Dental plaque is a sticky, white layer of bacteria that clings strongly to the tooth surface and grows thicker if it is not removed. Hence, the need to brush twice a day. When dental plaque hardens, it turns into calculus and cannot be removed by brushing. It requires scaling by a dental professional to remove the calculus.

If not removed in time, plaque or calculus can cause gum problems (unhealthy gums or gum disease) and may lead to tooth loss.

  • How do I keep my gums healthy? +

Gum health can be maintained through proper brushing and flossing twice a day. Since there may be areas in the mouth inaccessible by a toothbrush, you need to visit the dental clinic once or twice a year for scaling by a dental professional.

Scaling is necessary to remove plaque and calculus to reverse or prevent the progession of gum disease.

  • What is tooth decay all about and how do I prevent it? +

Food or drinks containing sugar or starch causes repeated cycles of acid attacks causing the tooth (enamel and dentine) to lose its minerals.

Tooth decay can be stopped or reversed at the initial stage with fluoride. However if the decay process continues, a cavity is formed and a filling will be needed to fill the hole in your tooth.
